A jailing system that just teleports a player to a marker and starts a countdown isn’t a prison — it’s a timeout. Pickle’s Prisons builds an actual incarceration experience: sentenced inmates get an outfit change, their items confiscated, and are sent to a functioning facility where they can serve time, work jobs, trade contraband, or coordinate a breakout with other players.
Core Systems Inside Pickle’s Prisons
The script handles the full custody pipeline. When a player is jailed — either manually via admin command or automatically through an integrated police script — their inventory is cleared and held for release, they’re dressed in prison clothing, and a sentence timer starts. From there, three paths exist: wait it out, reduce time through assigned work activities, or attempt a breakout with other inmates.
Work assignments include kitchen duty, facility cleaning, and exercise yard workouts. Each activity is configurable through the config file — server admins can add custom tasks or adjust the time-reduction rates per activity type. The commissary system runs a prison economy parallel to the main server: inmates can collect items scattered around the facility on regenerating timers and trade contraband through the plug mechanic, which creates social RP inside the jail rather than just a waiting room.

Framework and Dependencies
Pickle’s Prisons requires ESX 1.1+ or QBCore plus ox_lib (mandatory, framework-independent). The script ships with an SQL install file for database tables and a full installation guide at docs.picklemods.com. Ox Inventory or a compatible ESX inventory is needed for the metadata-based item handling. The code is 98.9% Lua with the source available on GitHub under PickleModifications — open source, auditable, and forkable.
Why This Over a Basic Jail Script
Simple jail scripts create dead time. Pickle’s Prisons turns incarceration into a social zone with its own economy and objectives. Inmates have agency — work to reduce their sentence, trade contraband with other prisoners, or plan a breakout. That social layer is what makes a server’s criminal justice system feel consequential rather than punitive in a boring way. The breakout mechanic in particular creates emergent server events: police have to respond to active escapes, which generates RP on both sides of the interaction.
